Menopause: The Great Equalizer

I am so thrilled to welcome Dr. Miriam Greene M.D. as a contributor to the Olga’s Secret blog. Dr. Greene has played a pivotal role in the development of Inner Intimates. The following insights were written by Dr. Greene after a very extensive consultation with a woman approaching menopause.

“While it’s true that menopause is the great equalizer, the side effects and potential issuesMother Daughter associated with it are not equal for everyone. I believe that menopause is good for some but for others not so. While some women have every side effect of menopause in the book, others have nothing. Nada.

And of course there is a range of menopause side effects. So while you are getting worked up about those pending symptoms, menopause can be freeing and energizing.

Menopause is also devastating and scary for most women. Many health care professionals say this is what is it, live with it. The aging woman needs to accept the changes that come from menopause. This is what is so hard: the reality of getting older; giving up those dreams of youth; feeling pushed aside; and making room for the younger set.

My next blogs will individually go over the most common menopause side effects and tell you what you can do to alleviate and live with these changes day to day. It’s sometimes not easy, but our strength and perseverance will be what gets us through it.”

Dr. Miriam Greene practices obstetrics and gynecology in New York, NY.  She is Board Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Greene entered private practice at NYU in 1989 where she brought hysteroscopy to the University Medical Center, where she still performs it today.

Dr. Greene’s interest in menopause and perimenopause began when she noticed the small complaints and problems her 40 and 50 year old patients were having.  She also noticed that many of these complaints went ignored or were just shrugged off as nerves by the patients’ generalists.  She wanted to educate her patients to be attractive and vigilant to these changes and understand that many of these changes are in fact normal, real and treatable.
