“Trust yourself. Create the kind of self that you will be happy to live with all your life. Make the most of yourself by fanning the tiny, inner sparks of possibility into flames of achievement.” ~Golda Meir
I was pondering as to who I should pick as a woman that I would want to emulate or speak about this month; Women’s History Month. Then I realized that every woman has a story to tell. I have met so many remarkable women, not only working in this new category of Women’s health, but in my past, personal, and business life that I believe has made a difference.
As I speak with women all over the country, they have their own stories to share with me. That’s when I realized that I too have a story to share; that I believe made me the strong and creative person I am today.
I grew up in the 1960’s; in the midst of the social revolution. Burn the bra, equality for women, Helen Gurly Brown. I got married when I was 18, right out of high school. I was a stay at home Mom until my youngest was about 4 years old when I went back to work. My last job, working for a cosmetic manufacturing company, was the job that changed my life forever.
Every penny, I had to think about, when it struck me that I was going to have to find my own solution to supporting MY family. If I was going to be poor/ or comfortable, I was going to be the one responsible and in charge of my own destiny.
So, in January of 1984 at the age of 38 years old I pooled together whatever little resources I had (and with the support and love of the man who would become my husband) I formed my first company OGM Cosmetic labs.
We were all women; 7 of us. We cooked out of stock pots with heating bands. Our little lab formulated products and I hit the pavement to sell and build my little company of contract manufacturing. It was the hardest job I ever had. Sometimes when I thought I couldn’t take the pressure any more, I’d go home in the middle of the day, put a pillow over my head and just scream!!!!!
Then I’d get up, wash my face, and back to work hoping I will hit payroll for that week. And I always did. Somehow…. and we grew, employing over 200 people at the height of my business career.
The challenges that mold us, as women; as people, make us better, if we let them.
I had great success and failures too. But those struggles made me a better and stronger person today. I retired from the cosmetic manufacturing business after 22 years. That was very hard for me, but I truly believe that I am the best I have ever been in my life…..so far.
What inspires me are all the women that feel they have a mission to accomplish. Those are the women I would choose to emulate (past and present, on a grand scale or small one). Their strength and determination is what brings success to one’s own self.
I read their stories and it helped prepare me for what I felt was my next mission in life. Realizing the weakness in this category of women feminine products, I felt compelled to bring products that truly work, which were creative, helpful for ones body, easy to use, and is made with natural ingredients, to bring health and comfort to all women, including myself.
…And that’s become the mission of Grohen Technologies Ltd. and Inner Intimate Brands.
Whether you are changing the world or just changing a small part of it, we are women helping women recognize our value.
